Juliet called me this past Saturday to ask if I’d seen my kitchen renovation on Young House Love. I immediately fired up the laptop to see for myself. I sent Sherry and John pictures of the renovation a few weeks ago, and it was so exciting to see our kitchen featured as a reader redesign on one of my favorite blogs. I have to admit that reading all of the comments from This Young House’s dedicated readers was particularly enjoyable.
Thanks so much to Sherry and John from Young House Love for such a fun opportunity.

Rachel,
Love your kitchen. Do you have posted resources for items used in your kitchen and approx. prices? Love, love, love your kitchen?
Penny,
I’ve listed the resources in the original post found here: http://urbannestblog.com/blog3/2009/05/18/its-finally-done/
I hope they’re helpful!

Rachel,
I love your kitchen!! I’m currently remodeling mine. Are your counters marble? If so, what have you heard/read about how well they hold up? I have heard they stain really easily. My friend says she can’t even leave an olive oil bottle sitting on the counter for fear it will leave an oil ring stain. I love to cook but I LOVE the look of marble. Thoughts?
Hi Heather,
Our counters are honed carrara marble and everyone from our contractor to the stone supplier recommended against using marble for a countertop. My husband and I spent a lot of time anguishing over the decision but just decided that we loved the look so much that it was worth a few stains over time. We haven’t had any stains yet, but we’ve had a lot of etching, even from water. Despite my type-A tendencies, the etching just doesn’t bother me. You can only see it from a certain angle, it definitely doesn’t jump out at you. I would recommend getting marble tiles and testing some things out so you can see for yourself what the potential imperfections look like. Our stone supplier gave us some samples for free to play around with. We left things like lemon juice and wine on them for a few hours to see how it looked.
I love our counters and am so glad we didn’t settle for something other than the look we wanted. However, there will be imperfections, and we’ve just decided to embrace them and not worry about it.
Hope this helps!
Rachel
Thanks Rachel! I love your blog! You guys do a great job!
eeek! Love it! We must be one the same wavelenght. We just redid our kitchen about 3 weeks ago and it looks SO similar to yours! (Actually, yours looks tons better because we have shortcuts such as marble tile and the underside of the cabinets aren’t finished). But I feel for you–we did ours over 4 days, and I was dying without a kitchen for only 4 days! Can’t imagine what weeks would have been like. My husband is european and swears by marble countertops–he says that’s the norm in Europe. We’re both avid granite haters, so the stain issues wasn’t even a concern for us. http://kathyrabago.com/blog/?p=1519
