Normally that wouldn’t sound appealing, but hear me out. A while back I bought a 3′ x 5′ black and white striped cotton dhurrie from Ikea, similar to this one. I was sure it would be perfect on my sun porch and that I would be able to throw it in the wash to keep it looking fresh. But, before I got around to putting the striped Ikea rug down, I found an indoor/outdoor rug that fit the space even better and could be hosed off, which of course beats doing laundry! And since the Ikea rug was less than $20 and would be another drive up Route 95 to return it, I decided I’d find another use for it someday.
Months later I started seeing lots of dhurrie and kilim pillows at places like Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn and decided to make my own!
It was this easy: 1) fold rug in half length-wise (right sides together) and machine stitch two sides (one short, one long); 2) turn right-side out; 3) stuff three standard bed pillows (from the linen closet!); 4) turn edges under and hand stitch closed.
The bold black and white stripes make a huge graphic statement in my living room that is an eclectic mix of black, white and brown furniture. The 3′ x 5′ rug folded perfectly for a super comfy bolster pillow on our leather couch. Even our dog Katy likes it…
You could do this with some of the smaller throw rugs out there, too. Or using a 3′x5′, fold it the opposite way for a more square floor pillow, though your stuffing options will vary to size.

And wouldn’t you know it, about two weeks after I finished this little project, my June issue of Country Living arrived in the mail, with this image on the cover! I love it when my hair-brained ideas are validated like this!
NOTE: the striped pillow on this bed is not likely a re-purposed Ikea rug pillow.

While we ‘re talking about pillows, you know that one of the best pillow for reading in bed, is buckwheat neckrolls? It is filled with buckwheat hulls, and is fantastic for inserting under your lower back while sitting up. Wedge pillows or lumbar pillows also render special back reinforcement while reading in bed.
