Holy Scrap! We won!

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

un_jbSorry friends, I couldn’t resist! Urban Nest is the proud recipient of the Honest Scrap award and we’re really excited! Thank you faithful reader and inspiring blogger, LeilaMac of {in the tweeds}, for sharing this award with us.

Here’s how the Honest Scrap Award works:honestscrap_thankyou

  1. Announce the award on your blog, with gratitude (and a link!) to the presenter.
  2. Share “10 Honest Things” about yourself.
  3. Present this award to seven other bloggers you find brilliant in content and/or design, or those who have encouraged you.
  4. Tell those seven people they’ve been awarded HONEST SCRAP and inform them of these guidelines in receiving it.

Since there are three of us who co-author Urban Nest, we’re going to share a little bit about each of us.

Honestly:

  1. Rachel has lived in her house for three years and still has bed sheets covering the windows in the master bedroom. The perfect fabric is just waiting to be found!
  2. Rachel has every episode of Design, Inc. and Sarah’s House saved to her DVR. She really does watch them over and over again.
  3. Rachel’s mom taught her how to sew when she was a little girl — all of her crafty abilities came from one very talented mom.
  4. Stephanie grew up wanting to design products for Lego and is still fascinated by the company.
  5. Stephanie does not believe everything must match to fit well in a room together, but often gets teased about painting her dining room to match her dishes: chocolate brown, mint, and white.
  6. Stephanie spent four years in Chicago where she discovered her love of paper and began a career involving stationery. Too bad it was soooo cold…!
  7. Juliet often walks her dog in the fancy neighborhood across the street after the sun goes down so she can see what the fancy decorators have done on the inside.
  8. Juliet can live and work all day among stacks of paper, piles of clothes, and heaps of fabric but cannot go to bed before it’s all put away.
  9. Juliet’s favorite on-the-go meal is a “Funky Monkey” smoothie from a neighborhood cafe. She tells herself that peanut butter and bananas are wholesome; counts the banana as a serving of fruit; always checks the menu board to reaffirm that it’s just frozen “yogurt”; and would never dispute the benefits of chocolate.
  10. All three of us at Urban Nest have roots in Pittsburgh, PA, though we never knew one another there, had mutual friends, or have since spent any time together there. Rachel’s husband, Stephanie’s husband and Juliet were all born and raised there. They all have family living there now and Rachel and Stephanie have become, strictly by association, diehard Steelers fans. I’m not sure any of the girls care much about football at all, but you can’t be from Pittsburgh and not pretend you’re a fan! It’s actually a measure of safety in the company of real fans.

Enough about football and enough about us. We would now like to share the Honest Scrap Award with the following blogs and bloggers who inspire us daily:

honestscrap_headers2

  1. Creature Comforts
  2. Jordan Ferney
  3. dress, design, & decor
  4. coco + kelley
  5. The Inspired Bride
  6. Oh Joy!
  7. Urban Grace**

**Erika at Urban Grace just had a beautiful baby girl. We couldn’t resist passing this award on to her since she’s truly one of our most favorite daily reads; however, with this award, we also grant her a bye. There surely is not time in her day right now for extra blogging! Congratulations, Erika!

Bedroom Inspiration

un_srDo you know about Serena & Lily? A friend brought me their catalog recently and I wondered how it could be that I’ve never come across this company before! I loved the photography just as much as the products on each page. But it was the classic, comfortable design that really drew me in.

{ all images from www.serenaandlily.com }

{ all images from www.serenaandlily.com }

The duo started Serena and Lily with fabrics and bedding sets to reinvent the nursery, but have since moved to bedrooms designed for all ages. I am in the midst of redesigning my guestroom (more on that to come) so I flipped through the catalog and then browsed the website for color schemes, fabric choices, and other ideas.

un_sl_bluepink

In addition to the bedding and accessories, there is also a selection of paints and fabric you can purchase by the yard. And I love the “Get Creative” tips on the site that offer up ideas, such as covering a basic, metal bedframe with rope! Click here for more details.

un_sl_paint

Lastly, check out the Bazaar section on their web site for some unique finds for your home. If you have the opportunity, visit www.serenaandlily.com or better yet check out a copy of the catalog. It’s a great size and will hopefully be an inspiration to you as well.

UN_rs-1The bold, floral wall paper by Anna French!  I placed the order yesterday, so it is official.  Violet’s closet will be lined with this fantastic paper:

{image from anna french}

{image from anna french}

Thanks for all of your input and encouragement to go bold.  As a few of you pointed out, this paper might make the room a little dark, so I’m considering just papering the back wall and keeping the other walls light and bright.  I have a little bit of time to think about it because Violet’s room is a work site right now, but it is exciting to watch the progress.  I’m thrilled that the old, chipping radiator is gone.

radiator collageI’m really curious to see what the new transom above the door will look like.   The old one was cracked and previous owners just painted it white to cover the problem.  It’s been removed and we will replace it with frosted glass.

We also removed the damaged door and have a new 5-panel door and fresh nickel knob from Rejuvenation.  It’s all coming together – stay tuned for more updates!

Custom Comfort

Friday, September 25th, 2009

un_jbI’m working with a client this week to do a little living room makeover using an array of new throw pillows. Their downtown Victorian rowhouse has a large living room with incredible floor-to-ceiling white paneling.  They have a large, upholstered white couch, a matching oversized reading chair, and a dark leather slipper chair. The chairs are situated in front of a huge front window surrounded by built-in bookshelves. Lots of room to layer pillows and add some fresh color.

The following image is of a Pottery Barn living room shown in the new fall catalog. I came across it just this week after we selected our store-bought pillows and custom fabrics and couldn’t believe the resemblance to our vision!

pb_livingroom

{image: Pottery Barn}

These are high-end, designer remnants from my favorite fabric store — you wouldn’t believe what I paid for them! Another clearance table treasure!

collage_custom

The taupe swirl in the background is a thick, soft chenille; the red paisley is a richly colored Ralph Lauren print; and the oversized stripe is a bold, woven canvas. We’re going to do a combination of several custom pillows out of these three fabrics that will coordinate with two of these Rowen pillows and one Julian pillow from Crate & Barrel.

cb_rowen&julian

All of the colors, textures and patterns sit beautifully together and represent my client’s sophisticated, artistic, and cozy sensibilities. This will be a well-balanced, comfortable space to lounge, entertain or nap.

I’ll be back next week some before and after shots for you!

Anyone else doing some sewing this weekend?

A Little Luxury

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

UN_rs-1With fall weather on the way, I want to add a few soft, luxurious touches to the rooms where my family relaxes.  I think I caught the bug for these sorts of things this weekend on a trip to the mall – there are so many fluffy, warm options out there right now.  Has anyone else experienced the new faux sheepskin throw from Pottery Barn?  It’s amazing – I can just imagine myself curled up in one of these sipping some cider on a chilly fall day.  Here is my wish list:

What warm and toasty treats will you be craving this fall?

Ready for Lounging

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

UN_rs-1I’ve been moving ahead with with a fresh blue and white color palette in my living room,  Thanks to everyone who chimed in when I was narrowing down the color options!  I still need curtains and some accessories on the bookshelves, but I now have pillows – woohoo.  Here is a reminder of what the room looks like.

living room

And here are my comfy new pillows.

living room pillow collageI whipped these up using this Celerie Kemble fabric from Schumacher and a textured white fabric that I found at Williams and Sherrill.  I have to say that I’m really happy with how they turned out.  Now I just need to find some time to make crisp white linen curtains – maybe after I spend a little time kicking back on my new pillows.

A Twisted Tradition

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

un_jbI finally completed a handmade baby present for dear friends of ours who had a baby boy named Henry months ago! Ugh. Embarrassing. But I tell myself that, like receiving a wedding present right before or right after the wedding, new parents are overwhelmed enough with all that’s going on that it can be refreshing to receive a gift well, well after their baby is born.

collage_henry2

Rachel and I have a set of vintage letterpress blocks that we use for our home decor business. We love finding unique ways to use them, like embossing velvet, and printing on linen. With all the vintage feedsack pillows out now, I was inspired to create these custom baby pillows using natural linen and fabric paint.

Here, you can see I went with a bold red to match the tiny ticking stripe on the selvedge, which was such a sweet detail I had to work with it. I also wanted to share with you the combination of letters and numbers, because I love both; however, there’s a pretty significant imperfection between the 2′s on the birthdate pillow, so it’s just a sample.

I like the whimsy of bright red for a little boy and the twist on a traditional monogrammed or engraved keepsake. I hope Henry’s mom and dad like it, too. Actually, I really hope they still like me…

The process was really quite simple if you like to sew and have a set of block letters to work with. And if you don’t, shoot me an e-mail and I’ll gladly do one for you!

Here’s how I did it:

collage_henry

  1. The first step is to measure, cut and mark your fabric — it’s much easier to print on your fabric before stitching it together.
  2. Then I mixed two colors of fabric paint to create the perfect shade of red, aligned my letters, and marked their placement on my fabric. Be sure to work on a thick, absorbant surface such as a piece of cardboard, so that your paint does not seep through.
  3. I used a sponge brush to apply paint to the surface of my letters and applied each letter to my fabric with firm, even pressure.
  4. As you can see in the bottom left image, the paint didn’t come out evenly, but that’s easy to fix with the right artist brush. For straight edges, I use the small flat one, and for rounded details, I use the pointed one. You may prefer the rustic, uneven impression and choose to leave it as is.  I went back and forth about how I wanted mine to look.
  5. After that, allow the paint dry for 24 hours and heat set both sides using a hot iron (as directed on the paint bottle). This allows the fabric to be washed without compromising the painted details.
  6. Finally, stitch your pillow together and insert your pillow form.

Off to the post office before I have to attach a “Happy 1st Birthday” card to the package!

Sleeping on the Couch

un_jbI scored a terrific bargain last weekend at Anthropologie that I’m excited to share with you. These Kapali Euro Shams that I have always loved were on clearance for $7.95 each — down from $48.00!

anthropologie_kapali

For as long as long as I’ve been admiring this collection at Anthropologie, I’ve never considered actually buying any piece of it because it’s not the right fit for either of our bedrooms and they were pretty pricey. But there’s something about a bargain that gets the creative juices flowing for me and it didn’t take long to envision them in our living room!

Why not, right?

{image: Kapali Collection for Anthropologie}

The colors are perfect as I continue to layer in shades of orangey-red. The oversized graphic detail balances the scale of some of my smaller throw pillows with the large patterned rug and newly painted foyer wall. Come to think of it, that striped bolster is stuffed with standard bed pillows, too. I promise no one in our home is sleeping on the couch, unless you count the dog.

collage_livingroompillows

Best of all, I can throw these shams in the wash, which means I don’t have to debate with my husband about why I’d prefer him to not rest his head on that pillow, or that one, or that one…

In the Closet

Friday, September 18th, 2009

UN_rs-1My mom came to visit this week so that I could get a jump start on all of the projects I have in the works.  Violet and I were both sad to see her go this morning, but I made a lot of progress while she was here.  I focused mostly on the updates to the guest bedroom – more on that in the weeks to come.  I did make a little more headway on Violet’s room, too.  I mentioned earlier this week that we are turning Violet’s miniature closet into a playroom.  Behind this small door is a pretty good sized space for a little girl:

Violet's room furniture

It’s about 3 feet by 9 feet, but it’s in rough shape.  The plaster walls are falling apart in some places, and it’s just not very practical for hanging clothes.  These pictures aren’t the best, but you can get an idea of how the closet is set up today.

closet collageThe shelves and one small hanging bar are coming out next week, and we’ll be fixing the plaster walls.  Once I have a clean slate, my plan is to wallpaper this small room with something very fun and feminine.  Here are the current candidates:

{images from Anna French, Jonathan Adler, Studio Printworks, and Designers Guild}

{images from Anna French, Jonathan Adler, Studio Printworks, and Designers Guild}

I’m leaning towards the bold floral print by Anna French – how often will I have a chance to use a wall paper like this?!  But, I still love the softer-hued papers by Jonathan Adler, Studio Printworks, and Designers Guild.  Which one would you choose?

Fit for a King

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

un_jbI just finished some custom bed linens for a client — two king shams, one standard sham, and a king duvet cover. It was a lot of fabric to wrestle with but the results were worth it.

Our client already had a luxurious master suite with a floral-upholstered bed, pale pink walls and rich linen drapery. The bedroom and sitting area are traditional and she was interested in a more tailored layer for the bed.

When she pointed to this favorite Domino bedroom, I knew we were going to have fun designing something to complement her style.

collage_inspiration

{image: left, Domino}

We selected an ivory cotton sateen and two linens in pale pink and soft red to match the bed and other decor already in place. The duvet cover and king shams were done with wide bands of pale pink linen, trimmed with the soft red linen, and finished with crisp mitered corners. The standard sham included a reverse color scheme with a feminine ruffle and piping to coordinate with the silk ruffles that trimmed the linen drapery. It will also have a large monogram that the client is embroidering on the front.

Finally, each piece included delicate ribbon ties to close.

collage_linens

My only regret is that I don’t have better photography to show it off, because we really did come up with a lovely set.  With a few last-minute  changes to the dimensions, by the time the job was completed (on the eve of a holiday weekend) I was too focused on delivering the product to get the photos I’d hoped for.

As for handmade bed linens fit for a king, now I know why they’re so expensive!

The Before Shots

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

UN_rs-1The work on my daughter’s room was supposed to start this week, but our contractor was delayed a week – drat!  Actually, it’s probably for the best.  It will give me more time to line up all of the finishing details that will go in the room once the dust has settled, and it also gave me time to take some before shots.  Here is what Violet’s room looks like:

Violet's room collageThere are lots of things that I love about Violet’s room today.  I’m a huge fan of pale blue walls for a little girl and the touches of red add just the right punch.  My favorites are the sentimental gifts from family and friends, like the quilt that my mom made and the pewter pea pod from Juliet:

Violet's room collage2Despite all of the things I love about her room, it’s time for a change.  As Violet has gotten older, she has had more say about what comes in to her room, and everything she picks is pink!  I don’t really like the pale blue and light pink combo for my almost 4 year old, so I’m just going to embrace the pink in her new room (as you can see from the sneak peek of the fabric choices).  Some new furniture is also in order to replace the changing table and rocker that are still in her room.

Violet's room furniture
We are transforming the little closet into a pint-sized playroom, and the toys that have landed all over our house will finally have a home!  We are going to replace the changing table with an armoire to make up for the loss of the closet.  Violet and I have lots of other tricks up our sleeves for her new room – I can’t wait to share them all.  Keep your fingers crossed that the work will start next week!

It's {almost} That Time of Year

un_sr2They’re out there. The 2010 calendars are slowly emerging on blogs and web sites. It may be a little early to be thinking that far ahead, but I love to see the fresh designs and creative solutions that surface each fall. Here’s a round-up of some I’m digging right now. So what do you all think-have you seen any out there that are must haves?

un_jbOne of my favorite blogs to keep up with is A Brooklyn Limestone. I actually think it’s one of the very first I started reading a few years ago when, by six degrees (perhaps fewer) of separation, I learned about Mr. and Mrs. Limestone’s fabulous renovation in Brooklyn. It was about the time that most of my friends were buying their first homes and there was lots of conversation about tearing down walls, renovating bathrooms, gutting kitchens, etc.  While this Brooklyn limestone was (still is!) an exceptional undertaking, it was that much more fun to see what major renovations really looked like.

Well, jump ahead a few years and Mrs. Limestone has not only shared an amazing story of reinvention, but her design ideas, worldy experiences, wit and photography have become a must read for me and many, many others.

limestone_collage

Here’s the thrill: a few weeks ago, Stefanie (a.k.a.  Mrs. Limestone) announced that she would be willing to sell her photography to her readers in response to some online requests. These are photos she’s taken everywhere from South Africa to Coney Island. They are incredible snapshots of a life well-traveled and you simply can’t beat the price! Prints begin at $6 through Zenfolio. Mine arrived within the week, neatly packaged and beautifully printed.

Check out the details here, as this is the second of her two-week trial period. I am thrilled to have three of them for my home and I am sure you will agree, these are gallery-worthy photos!

Send It, Frame It, Put a Drink on It

Friday, September 11th, 2009

UN_rs-1

I recently found some cards that I thought I might frame as art work on Horne.  Well, I came across the designer’s website (I can’t remember which of my favorite blogs posted the link – anyone know?), and I love all of the cards from kamal.  It would be a treat to receive any of these in the mail, but I think they’d look fantastic hanging on the wall or displayed on a bookshelf.

{images from kamal}

The coasters are really fun, too – I love the black and white ink on the kraft paper.  Almost too pretty to actually put a drink on!

Check out all of Kamal’s design’s in the new online boutique.

Happy weekend!

Occasionally, I Like to Have a Seat

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

un_jbI’ve been admiring this chair from Wisteria for quite a while now. But since I have no business buying another side chair — I have quite a few already — until I have more room in my house to use them all, I need to work with I’ve got. wisteria-chair

Well, the new Wisteria catalog arrived this week just as I was getting started on some projects in my guestroom. I realized that I could so easily recreate this look with a beautiful old chair from my grandparents’ house that’s been tucked out of the way in the guestroom (where most things that don’t match end up).

With some heavier weight natural muslin and a 16″ bamboo pillow insert, both from my sewing room stash, I got to work updating my outdated toile upholstered occasional chair. If you’re not familiar with these bamboo inserts, they are absolutely my favorite. They sit like down — that is, full and dense — but are made from a renewable resource that is naturally antibacterial, and cost the same or less than down or feather pillows. Not to mention that our Golden Retriever bird dog goes nuts over the few feather pillows we still have around. The bamboo doesn’t interest her, but she will lick a feather pillow right out of the sky! Fortunately I can throw them in the wash! I digress. See what you think of my new chair:

collage_wisteria-chair

Now I can pull this comfy chair up to the dining room table, into the living room or even out on the deck and it will fit right in.

And as much as I would like to say that next on my list is to paint those drab green walls, there are a few other projects in line first. Rest assured, they’re getting a fresh coat of something luscious soon, but I’m not quite there yet. Stay tuned…

Big Fall Plans

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

UN_rs-1I have the nesting bug heading into fall this year and have more projects lined up than I’m sure I can accomplish.  I’m planning to finish off my living room, make some pillows and do another art project for the family room, spruce up the master bedroom, update the guest room, and last but not least transform my daughter’s bedroom – all before Christmas…  I might have bitten off a little too much, but I’m going to give it a try.  I’m starting with Violet’s room – here are my inspirations:

{images from Sarah Richardson Design and decor*}

{images from Sarah Richardson Design and decor8}

I want a sophisticated little girl’s room for my almost 4-year-old that will last for many years.  I’m planning to use a creamy, neutral palette for all of the major pieces and add splashes of coral and pink (Violet’s favorite color, of course).  Here is a sneak peek of the fabric I’ll be using:

Violet's fabric
I’ll be “breaking ground” in Violet’s room next week when our favorite contractor comes to help with some projects that are well beyond my skills, like remove the old radiator and repair the hardwood floors.  Stay tuned for more sneak peeks!

Can't Wait For Fall

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

un_srWith the cooler weather we had here in Richmond last week and the passing of Labor Day, I am now ready for fall. I know I’m jumping the gun, but I’m ready for pumpkins, football tailgate parties, and my families’ annual barn party. I’ve taken a look at some of the Pantone colors selected for fall and found a few things I’m loving.

un_fallcolors

1. Daybed and home accessories from CB2.

2. Pietre Knob, Flower from Anthropologie.

3. Garden Party Necklace in Berry from Stella and Dot.

4. Wool Harbor Pea Coat in Dark Rust from J Crew.

What will you be wearing this fall? Or adorning your house with?

Jot it Down

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

UN_rs-1All of the talk about back to school has me thinking about getting some new “school” supplies myself.  I particularly like having a stash of notebooks and notepads around for when inspiration strikes.  These are on my wish list:

{images from kate's paperie and paper cup design}

{images from kate's paperie and paper cup design}

I love this 100% recycled notebook from Kate’s Paperie and the printed spine on these pastel numbers from paper cup design – perfect for when I want to keep my thoughts together in one place.

For making lists and leaving notes, I’d like to have these:

{images from see jane work and anthropologie}

I can just picture how pretty my grocery list would look on this crisp, white notepad from See Jane Work or this kraft paper notepad from anthropologie.

What school supplies are on your wish list?

Decorating it Old School

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

un_jbWhile all the teachers we know are busy this week moving into new classrooms, I am dreaming of summer getaways to this gorgeous East Hampton, NY weekend house where the design and decor is loaded with charming and innovative details reminiscent of school days.

This is brilliant – a mop sink in the bathroom! Paired with tiled walls and linoleum floors, not only do you have a sleek, industrial, masculine bathroom, but a completely functional place to hose off the dog or rinse out your bathing suit in style.

And who knew those worn wooden classroom chairs would play so nicely together in the dining room?

collage_nyt2

The owners (who are also the designers) employ other schoolhouse details like roller shades, metal doors, and filament bulbs that subtly enrich the effect. The minimalist palette is crisp white with shades of gray and black throughout — kind of like a chalkboard — and is the perfect backdrop for pops of color found in fresh flowers, a bowl of fruit or a stack of books.

Even the long span of stainless steel cabinets and appliances recall the cafeteria line.

collage_nyt

What a clever and sophisticated interpretation of “old school” functional design. And a great example of ways we can use any space to inspire our own.

Book Plate Love

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

un_sr1I’m the type of person who likes to reread books, so I like to own books that I enjoyed and have a hard time lending them out. When I do give to others to borrow, I usually end up scribbling my name in the inside cover last minute…and it doesn’t look to pretty! I would really like to add a book plate to all of my coveted reads, so I am thinking on a cold day this winter I’ll get organized.

{ click to download printable pdf }

{ click to download printable pdf }

These are some book plate designs I came up with. Click on the image to download and print at home. Avery labels sells 8.5″ x 11″ sheets that are sticker-backed you can easily run through your printer. All you need to do is trim out and place inside your book. Let me know if these are helpful or if you have some interesting book plates to share!
