Getting Cozy: Fall Decorating Ideas

un_jbNow that we’re well into October, I’m trying to figure out exactly how I’m going to soften up my decor for the cold temperatures and crisp breezes. I’ve been digging through my stash of seasonal decor, scouring the Internet and experimenting with a few new things, but I haven’t brought it all together yet.

Here are some of the things I’m inspired by right now:

I love the rustic textures and colors of natural elements, like this DIY tablescape by OnceWed.com. I would mix something like this with jewel-tone velvet linens and sterling silver flatware.

I adore this navy blue wallpaper by Ferm Living. Dark blue is so often used to in beach and nautical decor that are reminiscent of summer, but I really love a rich, dark blue in the fall and winter. To me it represents the bare winter sky. I also think it coordinates beautifully with copper and orange tones like you find in bittersweet.

How about the simplicity of this bowl of yarn? Don’t you love it? It’s such a simple detail that creates so much coziness. Not to mention the endless colors you can choose from.

These minimalist, monochromatic details are a perfect combination of modern design and natural elements. I just love the pale green tones of this mantle-scape (is that real design term!). The shift from traditional orange pumpkins gives it just a little edginess that really appeals to me.

I also really like how the crisp lines and fresh whites in the image on the right are punctuated by the shape and texture of of the pheasant feathers. In fact, I’ve already started working with some brown and gold feathers on my dining room table. I even threw down a natural canvas tablecloth to build my minimalist palette and I like where it’s going…

But here’s what I need to know: can you have a tall centerpiece AND a chandelier? I love the look of dramatic centerpieces with lots of height to them, but I always wonder if it’s competing with my chandelier. Is it better to adorn the chandelier and keep the scale low and simple on the table, or does it even matter?
