Fabulous U-Fab

Friday, January 29th, 2010

I recently visited U-Fab, a relatively new discount fabric store in Richmond. Their goal is to have the lowest prices on fabric in town and I have to admit–they are quite good! It’s a “no frills” kind of shop, but I would definitely recommend checking out.

{ store front image of U-Fab }

I was mostly looking at their upholstery weight fabrics, which is the bulk of what they carry, and easily found many choices for my current project.
Their services include custom upholstery and commercial work, upholstery repair, and custom upholstered beds so visit their web site or stop in the store for details. I don’t think you will be disappointed!

Hudson Furniture Inc.

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

I was browsing the November 2009 issue of Elle Decor at the doctor’s office this morning and noted several things to look up when I got home. This furniture and lighting company from New York, called Hudson Furniture, is one of them.

Hudson Furniture Inc.

Aren’t these pieces incredible? The Monastery chandelier on the left, designed by Barlas Baylar, is made of nickel mesh.

About Hudson Furniture‘s sourcing practices: “None of the woods [they] use are harvested from old growth forests. [Hudson Furniture] wood slabs are domestically sourced from either salvaged trees or wind/storm damaged trees.”

…a vintage (inspired) wire laundry cart. I saw one in Ann Arbor several years ago and I am still thinking about it. I have the perfect little corner between two pieces of furniture in the living room. I would use it store blankets and throw pillows.

All in the Family {Tree}

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

I’ve been thinking about creating a family tree as a piece of artwork to have in our home. Since my husband and I are “branching” out with our own little family this March, I though it would be a fun project to start and fill in over the years. I started browsing online to get some inspiration and found these unique works of art.

{ customizable family tree from cmg designs }

This one shown above is from Etsy seller CMG Designs. You provide all of the information and she creates this piece on an antique map background. I was drawn to this one because of the vintage/historical feel.

{ images from etsy sellers lovliday and erin jane }

The above tree on the left is a unique idea. Etsy seller, Lovliday sells the tree with your names and dates along with 2 ink pads. The idea is that each guest at your wedding creates a “leaf” out of their thumbprint and signs their name.

I like the modern look of the tree on the right. Illustrator Erin Jane takes your family names and configures them into this sweet tree. You can choose different colors and also have the names grouped by family if you choose.

{ image found on Becoming Home blog }

This last tree is a cute idea if you want to incorporate pictures into your family tree. I like that all the photos are black and white and there’s just a hint of color.

Years ago my grandpa traced our family and tucked away in a box I have a spreadsheet of relatives going back about seven or eight generations. Included with that he gave everyone in the family a hand drawn map of all the relatives with their birth dates and dates of when marriages took place. It’s pretty amazing what he put together… I’m going to have to dig it out so I can get working!

Has anyone taken on a project like this before? Any suggestions for getting started?

It's Electric

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Sorry to plant that song in your head for the day! If you don’t know it, consider yourself lucky. I’ve been singing it since Friday afternoon when I discovered these porcelain wire insulators that are sold as “rustic knobs.” The package suggests they can be used decoratively on cabinets, furniture, coat racks or anything else you might come up with in your creative space.

We have an old honey-colored, hand-me-down media cabinet that I use as an armoir in our guest room. The style and color are not my preference, but it’s a nice piece of furniture that provides some very functional storage.

upcycled wire insulators

When I came across these “rustic knobs” with the same honey color veining, I decided they would be the perfect industrial upgrade to my more traditional cabinet.

I’ll admit, I had no idea what a “wire insulator” was, but here’s what I found online:

What a clever use of old materials — not me, the clever guy or girl behind packaging these old insulators for decorative use! I’m really pleased with the way they look in my guest room. I will take better photos of the entire piece as I complete some of the other projects piling up in that space!

Faking it with Flowers

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

It’s getting to be that time of year when I long for fresh flowers and green plants — the simplicity they offer after all the decorations are put away and the sign of life when the yard is brown. And while I love both fresh flowers and live greens, I also enjoy mixing in some unconventional versions of both. That’s unconventional, not artificial.

There are so many ways to add color and texture with the suggestion of a living thing in your home without simply replicating the real thing with sub-par materials. Take a look at some of these options:

Hundreds of Buttons & Jane JossLove these button bouquets by Hundreds of Buttons and wouldn’t these potted fabric leaves by Jane Joss be a creative and serene touch in a boring cubicle?

Porcelain Succulents & Wooden TulipsStill on my white on white on white kick, these porcelain succulents really appeal to me. They’re available as a set of three online, but if you live in Richmond, I’ve seen them sold individually at the Great Big Greenhouse.

These wooden tulips by Martin Jones are incredible. I love that each flower appears to droop naturally, even though they are carved from a solid material.

Funky Fabric FlowersAnd now we’re really getting unconventional — these flowers on the left, by Funky Fabric Flowers, are made from up-cycled plastic shopping bags! Definitely a conversation starter that would liven up a corporate desk or fit right into a modern dining room.

I couldn’t pass up this sweet ribbon flower with a button center. It obviously doesn’t have a scent, but I kind of want to rub my nose in it!

Alabama Chanin & The Canvas NurseryI have loved the look of these fabric flowers by Alabama Chanin ever since the book was released last year. The instructions are in the book or you can buy a DIY kit that includes all of the materials to make your own.

And the canvas succulent on the right is what started me down this path. I spotted it in the new issue of House Beautiful yesterday and was hopeful that I would love the whole collection at The Canvas Nursery. They are all really interesting, but not as much my style as I’d anticipated, which doesn’t matter anyway, because they’re also really expensive! Definitely worth a look though…

There are also thousands of tutorials online for making flowers and leaves from paper and fabric if you’re inclined to make your own. It’s a great way to use up your scraps!

What do you think — do you like to mix it up a little or do you prefer the real thing?

New Online Magazine

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Last week, Paper Crave announced that she has partnered up with The Inspired Bride to create a new online magazine, Nonpareil. The focus will be on weddings, but many projects will translate for multiple everyday uses. They describe the e-zine as “not just another wedding magazine with pretty imagery.” Yes, it will have those, but will also be chocked full of ideas and how-tos for the big occasion.

Well-Edited?

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

I’m trying so hard to weed out unnecessary things from our house — I just took a bunch of shoes, clothes and bags down the street to try my hand at consignment. I went from there to Goodwill to drop off the things that the consignment store didn’t want. Good start, right?

Except that I left the consignment store with a new-to-me sweater and Goodwill with a full-sized lime green file cabinet. Am I spinning my wheels or am I thoughtfully editing my decor? I’m going with the latter…I’ve worn the sweater countless times already and the file cabinet offers some much needed storage in my workroom. I intend to spray the file cabinet a crisp white at some point, but for now it fits right in.

file cabinetI also found myself in two additional thrift stores over the weekend looking for something specific to a project we’re working on. More on that to come later! Coincidentally, I found these treasures in the back of my car when I got home:

telephone table & ladderOn the left, this little telephone table is perfect in our small scale living room. The shallow drawer holds our remotes and the cord hole and shelf neatly accommodate my husband’s laptop when not in use. I plan to change the knobs and I’ll probably paint it at some point, though I sort of like the whitewashed gray that it is now.

On the right, an old bunk bed ladder! I’ve wanted a leaning ladder for a while — initially my intention was to put it in the bathroom to hang towels, but I think I like it in our guest room as a place for company to drape a coat or sweater, or rest keys and sunglasses. I also envision it with a couple of tea lights on each step for mood lighting.

mirrorI certainly don’t need another mirror, but I couldn’t resist the paneling or the price! I will definitely be painting this right away — just trying to decide if it should be a high-gloss white or a bold color.

watercolor circusThe soft, muted colors of this sweet watercolor circus are perfect in our bedroom. I’m always on the lookout for interesting artwork that has a history. I plan to re-frame it with simple gold molding to coordinate with some other art hanging nearby.

side tableAnd last but not least, I’ve actually had this side table for a little while and you can see that I’ve already changed the handles out. I plan to paint this a glossy white. I might even address some of the intricate details with a touch of gold to pick up the brass in the new knobs.

Why am I sharing all of this with you? So that you will hold me accountable to all the edits I mentioned above that will make these functional, lovable pieces of furniture and not just someone else’s junk in my house!

I vow to return with plenty of before and after shots!

Spotted It: Made It!

Monday, January 18th, 2010

I recently spotted these fantastic wool felt pillows on the Purl Bee blog and fell in love! I had to try one out for myself, but being a beginner sewer, I first checked out the instructions and decided it was a project I could handle.

The above image shows the samples created by the experts at the Purl Bee and below is my finished piece. I’m pretty pleased with the result and it makes a great addition to our new guest room. Visit the Purl Bee for step-by-step instructions to try one for yourself!

Real Joy

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

e-mail JulietToday we have something to celebrate! Rachel and her family welcomed a healthy baby boy into the world last night!

Nathan Andrew weighed in at 7 lbs 10 oz. He arrived a little earlier than planned and at noon on Wednesday, Rachel’s mental to-do list was visible a mile away. When we talked again later in the evening, she was full of peaceful joy.

New Year, New Look

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Happy New Year!  It’s been a little while since I’ve chimed in – thanks Juliet and Stephanie for helping out last week while Andy and Violet were sick.  We are trying to recover from a nasty bug that has hit our house before the arrival of our little bundle.  Only two and half weeks to go, if I make it to my due date!

Aside from being the official nurse at our house, I’ve also been busy un-decking the halls.  It’s not one of my favorite things to do – it’s always a little sad to pack away all of the festivity until next year.  But, this year I’m excited to change things up a little bit, and I’m not just putting everything back the way it was before Christmas.  I came across a quote recently that sums up the style I’m going for in the new year:

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” – Leonardo Da Vinci

I don’t know if it’s something that happens just because it’s January and it seems like a good time to clear things out, but I’m feeling the need to simplify my style.  And, with a baby on the way any time now, simplicity might actually be an achievable goal this year.  My new look started with the mantel in the family room – here’s what it looked like before the holidays:

I wiped  the slate clean and added two of my favorite black and white pictures:  a sentimental shot from a vacation in Paris and one of my little girl.  I also cut back to just one small votive candle and a single bloom in some of my treasured Mud Australia porcelain.

What do you think, do you like the new look?  Do you plan to make any style changes in the new year?

One Clever Idea

Friday, January 8th, 2010

e-mail Juliet…begs for another. Ugh. I need your help. It seems every time I try to upgrade some component of our aging house, I hit a brick wall — and not the rugged exposed brick interior wall I dream of having one day.

This was my clever idea: install a pot rack inside the kitchen cabinet that was built around our fuse box and therefore does not function well for standard cabinet storage. Look closely in the back of the cabinet below. When we need to access the fuse box, we simply slide the pots to either side and reach through. Not ideal, but preferable to moving cereal boxes, dinnerware or stacks of heavy pots and pans. Are you with me? Kind of brilliant, I thought, given the set up. I even installed a lid rack on the inside of the door.

pot rack

Now, it’s usually my fault when something doesn’t work the way it appears that it should, but I like to blame it on the age of the house, which isn’t actually all that old! Truthfully, I often blame the previous owners, which isn’t really fair either (with one or two exceptions that might include the kitchen cabinet/fuse box re-design referenced above). Sometimes (often) I think it would just be easier to move.

All excuses aside, I am clearly to blame for this one…

screwed

So now what I do? The panel is not hard wood — it’s whatever decent-looking, budget-friendly kitchen cabinets are made of. We have no intentions of remodeling any, so I can’t just ride it out. I don’t want to dismantle my clever pot rack and fill the hole, which wouldn’t work anyway because I don’t think you can fill particle board. And I hate chalkboards.* All of which mean I’m out of ideas.

cabinet exterior

So, what would you do, assuming you made the same ridiculous mistake I made? I need a clever idea to mask this not-so-clever oversight. Right now we have a removable (no screw!) hook for dish towels. Otherwise it’s a nearly blank canvas, but for an 1/8″ of a screw peeking through…

*I don’t really hate chalkboards. I actually love the way they look, especially considering how very popular they are right now. It’s the scraping of chalk on the board and the anthills of chalk dust below that I hate.

Bee Things

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

I discovered the whimsical company Bee Things this week and I am so delighted! The designing duo, Jeff and Shay, work out of Dallas, TX and their mission is to create things that make them happy and for others out in the world to be happier after seeing their product. Mission accomplished.

{ snapshot of Bee Things home page }

{ all images from Bee Things web site and Etsy shop site }

The product that first caught was eye were the delightful printed lunch bags. I love the bright colors and sweet animals. Check out the monkeys, owls, and birds…what kid (or adult) wouldn’t want to carry their PB & J in one of these? Their collection of prints are equally bright and fun. I’m considering purchasing one for our nursery… Also, there is an offer on their Etsy shop to purchase 3 of the bird prints for the price of 2. Check out all of the products here.

Additionally, if you wanted to “bee” inspired by some great design, visit Barfoot Worldwide. Jeff clearly is a talented designer with a sense of humor and a great eye for color.

My Favorite Color

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

posted by Juliet…is turquoise. I have an incredible turquoise necklace that matches my favorite pair of turquoise cowboy boots, and both look really nice lying around my turquoise bedroom.

Well, I just learned that Pantone officially named 15-5519 Turquoise the 2010 Color of the Year. Check out their description:Pantone 15-5519

“Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of wellbeing.”

Who doesn’t want to be there right about now?

In celebration of turquoise, I thought I’d share something I made over the holiday break. I was inspired by these fascinating works of art (there are so many, but it’s worth looking through them all!) that I recently learned about here. All of the materials I used came from my workroom stash and it was really simple to pull together.

handmade yarn wreath

Everything you see is what it appears to be — from the craft store — with the exception of the color (which really is a soft turquoise, even though my photography doesn’t capture that well!) and the bling. The bling is what I lovingly refer to as junk-bag jewelry — mismatched earrings, broken pendants, twisted chains — that I just can’t bear to throw away. In this case, I combined two pairs of earrings using small, flathead pins to attach them to my wreath form.

The whole thing came together in an evening and was a fun little treasure hunt inspired by my favorite color and the need for a little sparkle. A perfect winter poof to replace my holiday decorations.

Resolutions

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

I’ve never been good at keeping New Year’s Resolutions, so when my sister asked me if I’d made any for 2010 I joked and said “I’m having a baby this year–isn’t that enough!” It did get me thinking though and while I’m making no promises, I have a few I’d like to work towards.

{ all images from www.katespade.com }

Funny enough, I was browsing around the world of Kate Spade and came across these appropriate ones that fit my life…and their products. What are you resolving to do or change this year?

The Absence of Color

Monday, January 4th, 2010

JulietHappy New Year! I hope all of you have had some moments of peace and restoration over the past week. I was fortunate to have a totally relaxing, slightly lazy, and well-fed week at home with my husband. We took some time with family and friends, too, which was delightful.

And now it’s time to de-clutter and it starts with all the details and flourishes I was so consumed with just weeks ago in decorating for the holidays. I am desperately craving sparse surfaces, crisp walls, fresh flowers and the absence of color!

I find white on white to be both invigorating and relaxing…a place where I can create and where I can rest. And I’m eager to do both in the new year. Here is some inspiration…
