On the Road Again

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Assuming my car passes inspection! I’m not actually worried about that. But I am sitting in the book store across the street while my car undergoes state inspection. I’ve been poking through some of the new magazines for some blogging inspiration while I wait. Funny thing is, I didn’t make the connection to my subliminal source of inspiration until I started typing this post!

First I tore out this page from the new West Elm catalog — I love these framed maps in the dining room. West Elm {framed maps}Then I remembered that I have two sheets of Cavallini wrapping paper — a New York subway map and a Paris street map — that I’ve been meaning to do something with for a long time. You may recognize them from this post.

Cavallini Wrapping Sheets

And then, as I’m paging through the March issue of Country Living UK, I find this perfectly styled photograph by Hans Blomquist:

Hans BlomquistI realize these are not new ideas, so where is all this going? Well, nowhere new. But I am going to unroll my wrapping paper, fit them each two square frames and hang. They could end up in the bedroom, at the foot of our stairs, or in the living room. Assuming I can find the right frames (and that my car inspection doesn’t turn into an expensive fix-it!), I’ll be back next week with the after shots!

Oh, and while I have you, Rachel and I will be posting most days of the week for the next little while, but we may miss a day or two from time to time. As you know, Rachel has a newborn at home. Stephanie is officially on labor watch. And I am working on some new upgrades to the site. So things are quite busy in our various nests!

Community Gardening

Monday, March 29th, 2010

I love the idea of sharing plants — from one garden to another. My mom is an avid gardener and is always splitting roots from the ground or forcing roots from cuttings to share from her garden. She has literally lined her trunk with garbage bags to transport ferns, ivy, Black-eyed Susans, and Creeping Jenny to our garden, nearly five hours away!

The Balcony GardenerOn Friday, I planted some Cosmos seeds that a friend harvested from her garden last year and shared with me. I kept them in a tiny envelope in the refrigerator all winter. I can’t wait to see them come up along our new fence this year!

And then we have friends with a city vegetable garden who share the fruits of their labor all summer long when the abundance is more than they can eat in a week!

In the heat of the summer, I have once or twice thought wouldn’t it be easier to just have a rock garden. The answer is no. I would much prefer to nurture these plants from loving friends and family.

I like the idea of sharing seeds — I think I can manage that from my garden and even have fun with the packaging.

I have lots of these baby envelopes from Paper-Source. With a designer label, perhaps inspired by those from The Balcony Gardener, above, I’ll include the plant name, instructions for storing and sowing, and the date they were harvested.

Lounging

It is a grey and rainy day here in Richmond – I miss the sun from earlier this week!  It makes me want to curl up on a chaise like this one and flip through a good magazine.

Here’s hoping for a sunny weekend!

It would be perfect in my craft room for storing fabric, paper, and some of those magazines that I just can’t bring myself to throw away.

Lenten Roses

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

We had some major landscaping done about this time last year and I’m super excited to see how everything fills out this year. Various things are definitely starting to pop buds and sprout greens after a rather long and frosty winter in Virginia.

When the last of the snow finally melted I was astounded to discover two things: 1) that my Autumn Ferns not only survived, but actually seemed to thrive under the weight of the snow! They’re full and lush and ready for spring! and, 2) that my Lenten Roses were budding!Royal Heritage Lenten Rose

Silly me, I waited all summer and fall for them to bloom not realizing that they actually bloom in late winter/early spring — ummm, during Lent.

I had never seen these beautiful flowering plants before our landscaper introduced them to us. While this season won’t be their best — the greens are a little ragged, hopefully just due to the aforementioned snow — they are blooming beautifully.

In fact, I have this gorgeous, hardy stalk in a vase that’s been blooming all week. I don’t know that Lenten Roses are actually meant for “cutting” but since our rambunctious 65 lb dog has had a bit of spring fever lately and I found this lying on the ground after a furtive romp in the yard last week, I might as well enjoy them! And, given the season, I suppose forgiveness is in order…

By the way, if I haven’t already mentioned it, the Monrovia website is a terrific source for planning your garden. They provide a comprehensive, searchable plant library with great images and all the information you need to plant, sustain and enjoy your garden. Check it out!

Dolan Geiman Love

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

I think I’ve mentioned in the past how much I love the artwork of Dolan Geiman. He’s a mixed media artist working in Chicago, but originally from Virginia! He has released a new group of works this month for his new Spring collection, but I am most excited because he will have a show in the shop at Quirk Gallery during the month of April. The show runs April 2-24 beginning with First Fridays Artwalk…so you’ve got all month to check out his work. If you’re in other parts of the country, Dolan has a full schedule of shows and fairs throughout the summer. And you can always stop by his Etsy shop any day of the week to view his creations. Enjoy!

Whimsical Design

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

I’ve picked up a few whimsical things in my errands over the past few days. I first discovered these Automoblox “Minis” toy cars at Christmastime and bought one of each for some of the little ones on my shopping list. The interchangeable plastic, wooden and rubber pieces all come apart so you can build your own automobiles. I really wanted one for myself at Christmas, so when I came across them again last week, I just did it! Isn’t the craftsmanship adorable?

How about these white plastic napkin rings by Koziol for spring? So cute! I would love to do a whole table with them. I just bought one of each — a bunny and a bird. Even if I never use them with napkins, their sculptural quality is so modern and fresh sitting a shelf or desk.

I love inexpensive little treasures like these that inspire creativity and make me smile. Anything fun and inspiring make its way into your shopping cart?

Spring Treats

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Have you seen the new spring line from Pigeon Toe Ceramics?  There are some really cute additions to their collection of white ceramics – like these test tube vases, pendant lights, and butter dish.

Maybe the Easter Bunny will put one of these treats in my Easter basket…

Front Porch Fever

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

I am thrilled that spring has finally arrived here in Richmond – I had a serious case of spring fever this year.  It has been a long 2 months being trapped inside with a newborn and a 4-year-old, and I felt like myself again yesterday spending most of the day outside with my little ones and a good bit of time swinging on the porch swing.  I love our front porch, and when warm weather hits, I always feel inspired to make some tweaks.

The table and chairs that are on the left side the porch are ones that I’ve been “storing” for my sister until she and her hubby buy a house.  Well, it looks like their time has come, and I may need to return them in the next couple of months.  So, I’m dreaming of new possibilities for the porch, and I pulled this picture from Martha Stewart out of my inspiration file.

{image from Martha Stewart Living}

I think a wooden cot has real possibilities on our porch, and after some digging, I found this one through Remodelista.

At just under $60, it seems like a real steal compared to most of the outdoor furniture out there, and I love the idea of painting the wooden legs to match our decor.  I’m toying with changing the color of the front door to blue and adding a rug and fabrics like these:

{from top left: Dash and Albert diamond rug in blue/ivory, samoa stripe fabric in coral, arches fabric in pool, and st tropez fabric in mango}

The rug is from Dash and Albert and the outdoor fabrics are from Schumacher.  My only worry is that the cot will be too low…  But I may give it a try!

Anyone else have big plans for an outdoor space this spring?

{Green} Tea

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Since it’s 70 degrees here today and the gardens are popping with signs of spring, I’m starting to get excited about putting some things in the my herb pots. And, since Stephanie brought up Martha yesterday, the May issue of Martha Stewart Living features an article about homemade herbal infusions — using a French Press and fresh herbs. I think this year I’ll plant some herbs that will make nice French Press tea, like lavender, lemon verbena and thyme.

In the meantime, I got some lavender and mint from the farmer’s market to try my hand at Martha’s infusions. It will take a little experimenting to get the proportions right, but this is going to be a really nice garden treat.

You can read the full feature photo: Starbuckshere, but it’s as simple as snipping some fresh greens, steeping in boiling water, pressing and pouring.

I think I’ll make a pot now…

By the way, I can’t wait for these to go on sale (because they always do!).

Where is Martha?

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

I was at Home Depot this past weekend and was curious to see if the new Martha Stewart paint line was available…not yet. The Ralph Lauren display (that she is replacing) was still intact with no signs of removal. When is she coming? Does anyone know? The launch date is March of 2010, so I guess they have until the end of the month to reveal all those new colors…all 280! I can’t wait to see what is available and what colors I can put to good use in my house. Do you all have plans to check out her new line? What fun painting projects will you be doing this spring?

Birdhouse Lantern

Monday, March 15th, 2010

I stumbled on this ceramic domed birdhouse (orange) and feeder (ivory) at Marshall’s one day last week and couldn’t resist the possibilities. I love the shape and color of both, especially the feeder — I’m thinking a small votive candle or even a little plant inside.

After exploring various corners of the living room where these might hang best, I decided to hang them from the ceiling in our stairwell with the votive candle.

living room lanternsWe almost always have a ceramic lantern (above right) lighted on our coffee table in the evening and another small tea light (in a white egg cup, above left) on the dresser.

While I struggled to capture the full effect with the camera, we now have a really nice trio of glowing “lanterns” throughout the living room. So cozy…orange living room details

I’m having the best time coordinating all of my orange accessories, artwork and textiles in this space. I just hope I don’t grow tired of the bold color any time soon!

Wouldn’t these be cute on an Easter basket?

{images from the gilded bee on etsy}

I spotted the adorable flowers from The Gilded Bee over at The Inspired Bride.  The Gilded Bee’s etsy shop is full of treats that would be the perfect addition to a springtime gift.  I think the butterflies could even be cute framed in a little girls room.  The Gilded Bee is definitely a new etsy favorite!

Cordelia Pendant Lights

Just got the new Ballard Designs catalog in the mail and I love these Cordelia pendants. They’re so different from the typical Ballard designs. Wouldn’t they be great hanging above a counter in a cottage kitchen?

Furniture Shopping in Farmville

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

I’ve got two weeks until my due date and my husband and I are still trying to find a glider/rocking chair we like. We’ve been all over checking out chairs, but so far have come up empty handed. This past weekend my husband suggested we check out what Farmville has to offer, since they are known in Virginia for their furniture. Neither of us had shopped in town before, but had heard great things and it was a pleasant hour drive to get there. Needless to say – they have a TON of furniture shops/warehouses/showrooms to browse through…you could spend a whole weekend!

Unfortunately, we did not come home with a glider, just a new rug for our bedroom. But, we will definitely be going back for any future furniture needs. There are so many choices and the prices are quite friendly. I recommend going when the weather’s relatively nice. You can stroll through town and hit all of the stores on foot. These are some pics I took while shopping to give you an idea…you must check it out!

Best Dressed

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Did you watch the Oscars last night? I’m notorious for having award shows on in the background while working on a project, making dinner or checking e-mail. So I always miss a little here and there, but I did catch two stunning gowns.

I haven’t fully embraced Miley Cyrus as an adult celebrity yet, but this dress by Jenny Packham was perfectly demure and sophisticated. I thought she looked terrific.

Don’t the beads on her skirt twinkle like the candlelight lining these concrete steps?

Miley Cyrus Oscars Gown 2010 My other favorite was Demi Moore’s Atelier Versace copper ruffles. She always looks so fresh and healthy and last night was no exception. Demi is one of those people who wears the dress, while so many others let the dress wear them.

I decided this bedroom with luxuriously lived-in crisp white bedding, paired with an elegant peach-toned headboard and soft layers was just right.

Demi Moore Oscars 2010 gownI love to see what the stars are wearing. There were lots of princess gowns, which I didn’t love; a handful of architectural statements, that were too much for my taste; and plenty of color; all of which I think were trumped this year by the rosy tones and ethereal layers like the dresses above.

What do you think? Were you drawn to a favorite dress or trend?

Bonne Bon

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

I was browsing through Schumacher’s fabrics yesterday looking for inspiration, and I came across some new fabrics by Studio Bon (or at least they are new to me).  I’m pining for both the Sally and Oodles fabrics:

{Oodles in topaz and Sally in midnight by Studio Bon}

You may remember that I was considering Studio Bon fabric for the nursery.  Well, that was before I priced the fabric.  Unfortunately, it’s not in the budget for Nathan’s room, but I’m holding out hope that I can find a way to work some of this stunning fabric into my decor soon!

The Kitchen or the Bedroom?

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

I mentioned last week that these Dwell Studio dish towels from Target would undergo a little transformation for another room in the house. They were on clearance for $2.48 so I bought two sets. The packaging reads “3 kitchen towels”, which might explain why they were on clearance — there were only two in each package.

Dwell Studio Kitchen TowelsBut for $5, not only are four 100% cotton dish towels a steal, so are two pillow cases!

I’ve been tinkering with the decor in our bedroom for a long time now and there’s still work to be done. But these inventive pillow cases add just enough dimension to our fairly neutral bedscape (pretty sure I just made that word up!).

dish towel pillow cases

The bedroom walls are painted a muted turquoise with glossy white trim. Everything else is in shades of brown and white. For a while we had pops of bright red and more modern artwork going on, too, but I’ve moved those pieces out for a more sedated composition. I really like how the polka dots and stripes play with the more organic lines of our West Elm “Snow Leopard” duvet. And with that narrow turquoise trim at the end of each “towel”, the combination couldn’t be a better fit!

The project was as simple as pinning one polka dot to one striped dish towel, right sides together, and stitching along three edges. No hemming and no cutting.

Any creative re-purposing going on in your world?

Hammerpress

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

{ screenshot of Hammerpress web site }

One of my favorite letterpress companies is Hammerpress based out of Kansas City, Missouri. I love their art prints, quirky holiday cards, and funky notebooks all with their signature layered and unique design. I recently discovered they have redone their web site and added new product. Check it out here.

In addition to the great product they stock, they can work with you to create a complete custom look for your wedding invitations or choose from a selection “stock” invites as well. Not getting hitched? Take advantage of their super design skills for your business cards, stationery, or any other project you’re working on.

Take a few minutes to browse the Hammerpress site and you’ll be hooked, too!
