A New View

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

This weekend we picked up our first original piece of artwork from the framers, and I’m thrilled to have it hanging on the wall.  Here’s the new view when you walk in our front door:

Isn’t it lovely!  The piece is by a talented artist based in New Orleans,  Amanda Stone Talley.  I first saw Amanda’s work here and then again in Erika of Urban Grace‘s nursery.  I contacted her about a year ago to inquire about a painting, and it turned out that her 32″ x 28″ drawings on paper were right in my price range.  She only had 1 set available at the time, so she offered to do a custom piece for us.  It was a treat to work with Amanda – I sent her pictures to use as inspiration, and after a little back and forth, she created the perfect piece of art.

{inspiration pictures}

I love the piece so much, I’m tempted to go for a second!  Or maybe a second and third to hang together, like the ones that Amanda created for a client whose home was featured in Lonny Magazine.

Either way, I’m enjoying my first original work of art and am a little worried I’ve found a new weakness, much like the one I have for fancy fabric.

Stairway to Nowhere

Remember this thrift store extravaganza from last winter?

I’ve moved that old bunk bed ladder around the house quite a bit and I think I finally found the best spot for it. It’s on a narrow slice of wall in our upstairs hallway at the top of the steps. As small and nondescript as this space is, it’s where your eyes land as as you go up the stairs.

ladder_collage

For now, I’m loving the simplicity of the old wooden ladder with my glossy white owl perched above it. I like the idea of looking at ladder rungs as I climb the actual steps, too.

You might notice I also added two small brass hooks where I can toss a bag or a scarf in passing.

In another house, I might try it in an entryway as a clever coat rack.

Any new thrift store treasures in your house?

Vibrant V-Day

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

February kind of crept up on me this year and I can’t believe Valentine’s Day is right around the corner! I got thinking about it this week after I whipped up some frozen fruit concoctions for James and loved the bright colors.

He eats a lot of “adult” foods now, but I still send some pureed fruit and veggies to his sitter’s for snack time. The hot pink is mango mixed with a bit of raspberries and the purple mixture in the middle is a mix of blueberries, pear, and banana. Yum!

I love the bold colors – none of which I use in my home, so it inspired me to think about adding some pops of pink or red…and maybe not just for the month of love.

Here’s a rundown of the hot-stuff I’m lovin’:

- Hot pink damask wallpaper available at Urban Outfitters

- YES wall letters from CB2

- Hable C0nstruction’s fuschia ‘rope’ pillow

- Sweet berry drink coasters online at Quirk

- and Crate and Barrel’s romantic thistle pillow

Are you planning on special changes to your decor for Valentine’s this year? Or do you already have bold pops of red/pink in your home?

The Dining Room

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

I should be sewing pillows for Nathan’s room these days, but I’ve been side-tracked by my next project:  the dining room.  I promised myself that I will sew pillows this weekend, but in the mean time, here’s a little preview of what I’m working on for the dining room.  It used to be red with mostly black and white accents, and while I love a red dining room, the bold color was never really my style.  Now I’ve toned it down considerably, and the new color palette is cream, grey and camel.

The walls are already re-painted prism white above our chair rail and surreal blue below (it’s doesn’t look blue at all) – both by Glidden.  I just got the fabric I ordered for the curtains, aga reverse in camel by Quadrille.  Right now the bolt of fabric is precariously perched above the window so that I can get an idea of the finished look.  I know I’m going to love it!

I’m also planning to make a new set of table linens to match the new scheme, and I’ve been playing around with some ideas.  I don’t think I’ve found the perfect combination yet, but here’s what I’m toying with.

Last but not least, I found the perfect mirror for the space from one of my favorite local shops, Ruth and Ollie.  I love how the ornate shape is balanced by the simplicity of the unfinished wood.

So that’s the sneak peek!  I just have a few things  on my list to accomplish before the dining room will be complete, but I’ll keep you posted as I go.

Dining Room Delight

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

One of the items on my 2011 to-do list was to finally get curtains for my dining room. Since my sewing skills are sub-par and my time limited with working full time and chasing a nine month old around – I decided to purchase pre-made curtains and call it a day! Here is the room before:

And after:

Before:

And after:

The one thing I really wanted to be sure of was that, whatever curtain I choose, it had to be sheer enough to still let a lot of light in. We get tons of afternoon sun in that room and I didn’t want that to be compromised. Even though the main colors are a dark chocolate brown and turquoise, the sun shines through and I am happy with the result!

To the right is a close up of the curtain from the Target web site. It doesn’t look quite as colorful here as it does in person, but you can see the detail of the paisley pattern and get an idea of the product.

One Down…

…twenty-four to go!

I painted the navy blue accent wall in Nathan’s room this weekend, and I love how it turned out!

I’ve been having a little bit of trouble photographing it properly, but I hope you can get the idea from these shots.

The wall adds some extra depth and dimension to the room, and the curtains look sharp against the dark color.  It was such a quick project, too.  Only 3 hours from start to finish, and I didn’t even need primer.  It feels good to make some progress – now it’s on to pillows!

1, 2 and 3

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

I’m tackling the first 3 items on my list this month, and they are all in Nathan’s room.  He turns 1 on the 13th!  I’m not sure what is harder to believe, that a whole year has gone by or that I’m still not done with his nursery.  So, as a birthday gift to the little guy, I’m finishing it off.  I just need to paint one accent wall to show off the window treatments my mom made, make some pillows for the day bed, and find a rug to add one final cozy detail.

1.  paint accent wall in Nathan’s room

The paint chips are on the wall.   I’m leaning towards a Sherwin Williams color called indigo batik (in the upper left).  I can’t wait to see what the curtains look like against a dark backdrop.

2.  sew pillows for Nathan’s bed

I’ve decided on a pillow layout for the faux bed that I made for Nathan’s room.  I want it to feel less like a bed and more like a couch for lounging at least while he’s still in his crib.  I’m using two large bolsters on either end and a body pillow along the back, and then I’ve filled with 5 other throw pillows.  Two of the pillows used to be in the living room, but they don’t fit with the new scheme, and I love how they look in Nathan’s room (that’s my first trick – use the things I already have).  The pillow in the middle is an adorable one that Juliet made for the nursery – I’ll share a better picture of that when the whole bed is complete.  Now I need to cover the other 5 pillows!

3.  find rug for Nathan’s room

Lastly, the room needs a rug.  I basically have 2 looks in mind – navy stripes/zig zags or furry off-white.  I’ll wait until the wall is painted and the pillows are in place before I decide to see if the room needs another hit of color.  I have narrowed the choices down to these four (zig zag rugticking striped rugssheepskin rugikat carpet tiles):

It feels good to make a little progress!  I plan to keep the momentum going through the weekend, so stayed tuned for updates next week.

In the Nick of Time

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

I finally finished the three wreaths I set out to make as Christmas gifts with a day and half to spare! I gave you a glimpse of the first one here, but since then I added a little embellishment that I think helps complete the look. I had enough of the citron yarn to complete two wreaths and the third is a pretty blue called sea glass. And last, I added a thick chocolate colored grosgrain ribbon to each for hanging.

I am really happy with how they turned out and I think I might need to make one for my own home. Hmmm…maybe after the new year!

What was your favorite DIY project of the season? Or do you already have ideas to start working on for next year?

Easy Winter Urns & A Holiday Party

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

This is one of my favorite tricks for outdoor winter decorating. Two (or more, if needed) bunches of cut greens from the farm, the nursery, or in this case, the grocery store. Hollow out a hole in your urn or flower pot and insert branches. I don’t even take the rubber band off the base of them! Last year I still had some pansies blooming around the edges but since I never got around to planting fall urns this year, I filled in with some outdoor Christmas balls to match the red ribbons on my wreaths.

Winter UrnsIf you’d like to see a much more professional application of this trick, check out Sarah Richardson’s Holiday Party (HGTV). She creates an amazing arrangement of greens and sparkle outside her front door and includes a great tip for working in frozen dirt!

In fact, the whole episode is terrific — full of fresh holiday decorating and entertaining!

I’ve been looking for the perfect champagne glass for the last couple of years.  I would like something a little different, not a tall flute, but maybe a stemless glass or a coupe.  I’ve had my eye on these glasses by Kate Spade, but I wasn’t sure they were the ones.

Then I saw them in this table setting in the current issue of Lonny:

There isn’t anything that I don’t like about this holiday table.

The champagne glasses look fantastic, and the pink champagne is perfect.  It’s a tradition in my family – my parents, sister, and I all had pink champagne at our weddings.  Sadly, the dishes from West Elm have sold out, or I would be tempted to recreate the whole thing at my house!

How are you setting your table this holiday?  Have you had your eye on any new tableware?

Frosty Windows

Monday, December 20th, 2010

My friend Olga is a talented designer of many things. She and I were chatting weeks ago about ideas for holiday decorating, one of which really peaked my interest — using white window paint to embellish windows and mirrors with lace and winter silhouettes.

Look how fabulous her windows and mirrors turned out!

{image: navyblueshoe}

I tried my hand at it with little success using a “Crafty Dab Window Paint/Window Writer” and decided to leave it to the real artists — see above!

However, over the weekend I did stumble on a “Bistro Chalk Marker” that gives my less artistic  hand much more control and, quite frankly, is a lot less messy to wipe off!

I’ve been leaving silly notes on mirrors throughout the house rather than accomplishing any real decorating, but maybe I’ll finesse a few lace-y details before the end of winter!

Feeling Festive

Friday, December 17th, 2010

A white Christmas in Richmond is definitely not a given.  In fact, it’s unexpected.  Which is why I’m amazed that the picture of our house decorations from last year looks like this:

And this year:

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!  You can see that we’ve been doing a little work on the front of our house.  We replaced our deteriorating iron railing with a wooden one and changed our front door from green to blue.  I changed our wreaths, too, just for fun.  It’s hard to see in this picture, but there is a grapevine wreath that I sprayed white with a red bow on our front door.  I love how it all looks at night when the garland is lit and the porch lights are on – so festive.

Decorating the Bedroom

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Here are a few shots of the winter decorations in our bedroom. We usually have a tabletop tree set up with white lights to fall asleep to. But you might remember that I said I was going to do this…and so I did!

Winter Decorating in the Bedroom

Right or wrong, I never actually took down my yarn wreath that I made last winter! It matches our scheme so perfectly, even if the fuzzy yarn feels a little wintery all year long.

Otherwise, a few thoughtfully arranged glass ornaments hanging from a leaning ladder and two beaded snowflakes that I always hang in the doorway. They’re so nice to look at from the bed.

I try not to explode Christmas decor all over the house, but I do like a little twinkle where we spend our time.

Do you have Christmas decorations in the bedroom? Perhaps a little mistletoe…

Juliet's Holiday Vignettes

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

I’m getting started on my holiday decor. Here’s a little glimpse into a few vignettes I’m working on.

This is a white feather tree from West Elm’s winter collection a few years ago. I embellished the contemporary lines of the sparse tree with some classic gold and silver details and stuck just a few glittered evergreen picks for a bit of texture and color.

In the dining room, I have my modern Nativity set, fresh berries from my yard and a sprinkle of tiny acorns from Rachel’s yard.

On our coffee table (bottom image), I filled my favorite ceramic swan planter with fresh greens from Stephanie’s family farm. I wrapped some soft velvet ribbon around the swan’s neck and added a little sparkle using two mismatched costume jewelry earrings! I love the way this turned out. Using costume bling to decorate at the holidays can be so inexpensive and the possibilities are endless!

I experimented with this idea a bit more with an artificial wreath hanging from a mirror, also in the living room. The artificial green isn’t nearly as offensive hanging on the wall as it appears in these close-ups! Eek. You get the idea…

I’d love to do an entire tree (a small one!) with earring ornaments and necklace garlands. Perfect for a bedroom, a little girl’s room or a swanky dining room. If you’re interested, Forever 21 and H&M are excellent sources for great looking, super-cheap costume jewelry!

Upcycled Snow

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

I took a long walk with my dog on Thanksgiving to check out the window displays at our neighborhood shops. These are the windows of Paper Plus, a great little stationery store where I love to buy cards and gifts.

Upcycled Snow

The windows at Paper Plus always draw me in with their beautiful products. For the holidays, they simply strung packing peanuts on fishing line from the ceiling at varying lengths. With a few twinkling white lights and some lovely gift ideas, it’s a perfectly fresh, modern and resourceful vignette!

Since the store was closed on Thanksgiving, I was able to comfortably press my nose (almost!) up to the window and really take it all in. At one point, I realized the irony of standing outside in the elements, peering through the window at the snow falling inside! It was just that good…

On the Tree

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

I love these new ornament cards by Tiny Prints.  They really are a great idea.  I’ve never come up with the perfect way to display our holiday cards, and hanging them on the tree  would be a simple and charming way to do it.

I hope I receive one of these cards this year!  If not, maybe I’ll try turning the cards I do get into ornaments myself, hmm…

A Room for Relaxing

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

It’s time for a change!  The family room that we spend most of our time in has really turned into the kids’ space.  Andy and I spend a lot of time stashing toys away when we want to relax at the end of the day or when we have visitors.  So, we’ve decided that we need a grown-up space specifically designed for lounging after the little guys are asleep or when we have company.  The plan is to update our living room from a sitting room to a place where we can actually do a little more living.  Here is what our living room looks like today:

It’s not bad, but there are a few issues that have prevented us from really using the space.  For starters, it’s not all that cozy or comfortable.  The couch is small and a little hard and the empty bookshelves have always bothered me.  The previous owner of our house was an English professor, and we have more built-in bookcases in our house than we need.  So, the plan for this room is to remove the bookcases and use the wall space for some curtains to soften things up.  The bummer is that the hardwood floors don’t go under the bookcases and the walls behind the shelves are covered with wallpaper that has been painted several times.  This means repairs to the floors and the walls, so we’ll need to empty the room and repaint the walls.  We’re going to take it as an opportunity to start from scratch.  I’m planning to keep some blue, but not quite as much.  I’m thinking white walls, neutral furniture and pops of bright blue.  Here are some images I’ve been using as inspiration:

{images from House Beautiful, J.Crew, Domino (I think?), and Josephine Sasso}

Here’s my current design board:

We’ll be keeping the sideboard (and blue chairs, for now), but the rest of the pieces will be new additions.  I’m so excited about the artwork by Amanda Talley.  It’s our first piece of original art, and we actually commissioned it especially for the space – I’ll share more about that process some other time.  The couch will be much bigger, and more comfortable, than our current couch and will have large table lamps on either side.  We bought both the couch and lamps on sale this weekend at Ruth & Ollie, one of my favorite Richmond stores.  I’m planning to make throw pillows for the couch out of this fun fabric by Quadrille.  We’re considering a gilt cocktail table to replace the ottoman that our cats have shredded, but that won’t happen for a little while.  The final touches will be white linen curtains and some white flowers.

We won’t be tackling the floors and walls until after the holidays, but some of the furnishings will be in place before then.  I can’t wait until we’re relaxing in our new living room.  I’ll keep you posted as it comes together!

The Proverbial Lightbulb of Ideas

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

In the past week, I’ve been inspired by big lights, little lights and these three very bright ideas:

These gorgeous burlap lanterns were hanging from rafters in an incredible urban warehouse where R.Home for the Holidays was held last week.

I have a terrific dress form in my work room that is typically decked out in ribbons or fabrics. She will be the perfect winter-y addition to the bedroom adorned with white white lights. I usually have a tabletop tree strung with lights, but this year I’m going to be less conventional.

Even less conventional, I’m officially on the hunt for an old wooden ladder to decorate on our sun porch!

The Flamingo

Friday, October 29th, 2010

My little flamingo went off to school this morning!  I was sewing feather boas on to this costume into the wee hours last night, but I finished in time for the big Halloween party at school today.

The house and car are covered with pink feathers, but Violet loves it.  I have to say I got quite a kick out of seeing her skip off to school this morning, feathers blowing in the breeze!  If you want to make your own flamingo, I used this Simplicity pattern.

*I’m behind on my tutu tutorial – I’ll post it soon!

Home Remedies

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand seeing prescription bottles and vitamins spread out on counter tops.  However, I do get that leaving them out is the best way to remember to take them throughout the day.

In fact, I recently learned the importance of taking vitamins with food in order to maximize our bodies’ ability to absorb them. I used to take them at night, which was easy to remember to do while brushing my teeth.

Since I made the switch from bathroom routine to kitchen, I tried stashing the bottles in the kitchen cabinet with my coffee mugs, dinner plates and cereal bowls. Varied success, at best.

I finally conceded to leaving them on the counter when I found these adorable ceramic “soup can” spice jars at World Market.

Ceramic "Soup Cans" from World Market They have a sealed top and are just the right size for my daily vitamins. I have them lined up next to my other critical home remedies — aloe, espresso maker and coffee beans — where they are tastefully visible at mealtime! And I simply leave the original bottles out of sight in the cabinet above for refills and reference.

On a side note*, my friend and wellness guru, Rebekah, has convinced me that vitamins and minerals sourced from real food and made without synthetic fillers are — for obvious reasons — much better for our bodies. I made the switch about eight weeks ago and there is no question about their efficacy. Absolutely, 100% worth the cost to buy food-based supplements.
