Back in the Saddle

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

I’m back at the sewing machine these days – there are tons of stitches in my future. I’m still plugging away at my list, and after finishing the porch swing, I’m on to curtains for the dining room and curtains and pillows for the living room.

I love the fabric for the dining room curtains, but I’m particularly excited about my plans for the living room.  You may remember from last fall that I’m working on a blue scheme using our existing blue chairs as a starting point.  Now that we have a fabulous painting, new couch and a little extra floor space, it’s time to start to add the finishing touches.  Here’s my updated plan:

I just love the fabric scheme:

Hopefully in a few weeks we’ll have curtains, pillows and a reupholstered ottoman…  The lighting will have to wait until our wallet has recovered.

Outside Oslo

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

I am really excited for the debut of Jessica Jones’ new line of fabric, Outside Oslo. The home decor fabrics are being brought to life by The Needle Shop in Chicago and will be available for sale in May. If you are a retailer or manufacturer you can also visit their web site for wholesale information.

Will you purchase any of these designs for your next home project? Any favorites?

The Dining Room

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

I should be sewing pillows for Nathan’s room these days, but I’ve been side-tracked by my next project:  the dining room.  I promised myself that I will sew pillows this weekend, but in the mean time, here’s a little preview of what I’m working on for the dining room.  It used to be red with mostly black and white accents, and while I love a red dining room, the bold color was never really my style.  Now I’ve toned it down considerably, and the new color palette is cream, grey and camel.

The walls are already re-painted prism white above our chair rail and surreal blue below (it’s doesn’t look blue at all) – both by Glidden.  I just got the fabric I ordered for the curtains, aga reverse in camel by Quadrille.  Right now the bolt of fabric is precariously perched above the window so that I can get an idea of the finished look.  I know I’m going to love it!

I’m also planning to make a new set of table linens to match the new scheme, and I’ve been playing around with some ideas.  I don’t think I’ve found the perfect combination yet, but here’s what I’m toying with.

Last but not least, I found the perfect mirror for the space from one of my favorite local shops, Ruth and Ollie.  I love how the ornate shape is balanced by the simplicity of the unfinished wood.

So that’s the sneak peek!  I just have a few things  on my list to accomplish before the dining room will be complete, but I’ll keep you posted as I go.

Take 3: Cintra Fabric

Friday, September 10th, 2010

I ordered some swatches from Quadrille recently and have fallen for cintra, this funky ikat pattern, in browns and turquoise.  I’d love to find a spot for it in my house, but I’m not sure where.  I thought I’d throw it out there for this week’s take 3 and get more inspiration from the girls.  Here’s what we came up with:

Juliet’s Take: Feminine Swagger
This space is a marriage of feminine lines and masculine textures.

I’ve wanted one of these French Colonial Chairs from Wisteria for a long time. I decided Rachel’s fabric selection would be a great way to bring some color and dimension to the chair’s delicate lines and neutral palette.

I chose this incredible vintage telephone in bright yellow (I’m sorry, I can’t seem to shake it!) to take the blue and brown Ikat fabric in an unexpected direction.

To pull it together, I found all three of these terrific throw pillows on House & Home’s blog. I’d put the felt petals on the upholstered chair and toss the others on a dark leather chaise nearby.

Finally, the Bowmont Mirror from Anthropologie complements the feminine lines of the old telephone while the Jack table lamp keep things grounded a bit.

Stephanie’s Take:  Cozy Chic

I would use the Cintra fabric in Multi Browns and Turquoise to make a cozy oversized pillow. I would then add it to this sleek chaise from CB2 to create a cozy nook in a corner of my home. To add a touch of elegance and some soft lighting, this chandelier would hang above this handcrafted rug…described as ‘a modern take on the vintage area rug’ – love it! And to top it off, a sweet smelling candle to set the mood for relaxtion.

Rachel’s Take:  Relaxed Lounge

I’d make some comfy pillows out of cintra and another Quadrille fabric from their China Seas collection, Lysette reverse in taupe.  The pillows would rest on the Arlington sofa from Pottery Barn.  I can just picture myself kicking back on the pillows under this throw from Jonathan Adler!

What would you do with a couple of yards of this great fabric?  Do tell!

Monaluna

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

I recently discovered Monaluna and fell in love with the whimsical design and fresh color palette of the new Monaco collection. The fabric, made in India, is 100% organic cotton and printed with low-impact, AZO-free dyes. This collection became available this week through the Monaluna web site and is also available at wholesale for those of you in the trade.

Jennifer Moore is the designer and creative force behind this collection. Check out her web site and blog for more information and inspiration. I love seeing the stacks and stacks of fabric bolts…pure eye candy!

Quadrille fabrics!  My personal favorites are the yellows, camels, and the prettiest blues.

I had a hard time narrowing it down to these 16!

I am excited about this!

Have you seen the new customizable fabrics from Mod Green Pod?  I love Mod Green Pod’s organic upholstery fabric – I used their fabric to make some storage bins last year.  Anyway, now you can have their fantastic designs printed in any colors you want.  These are some of my favorites from their newest designs, but you can have their old prints customized as well.

I can’t wait to find a way to use these fabrics in my house!

Bonne Bon

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

I was browsing through Schumacher’s fabrics yesterday looking for inspiration, and I came across some new fabrics by Studio Bon (or at least they are new to me).  I’m pining for both the Sally and Oodles fabrics:

You may remember that I was considering Studio Bon fabric for the nursery.  Well, that was before I priced the fabric.  Unfortunately, it’s not in the budget for Nathan’s room, but I’m holding out hope that I can find a way to work some of this stunning fabric into my decor soon!

Fabulous Fabric

Friday, February 26th, 2010

I have been dreaming about this room by Sarah Richardson ever since I first laid eyes on it.

I’m a huge fan of grey and cream – a simple and clean color scheme made interesting by the layering of patterns and textures.  I think I’ve mentioned before that I’m a fabric girl, and it’s the fabrics that make this room for me.  In particular, I love the floral fabric in the curtains and pillows on the bed.

I dug up the source, Designer Fabrics Online, in hopes that I will find a way to use this fabric in my house.  Unfortunately, it’s currently out of stock, but I will keep checking back.  What’s really great about this fabric is that it’s double the usual width at 110 inches wide which makes it perfect for larger projects like a duvet cover or shower curtain, and it clearly makes beautiful curtains.  Designer Fabrics Online has some other fun fabrics, too – it’s worth checking out.

Fabric Find

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

UN_rs-1It’s been a while since I’ve paged through a copy of Better Homes and Garden, but I was at my husband’s parent’s house this weekend, and my mother-in-law had the November issue.  I’m so glad that I took a look because next month’s issue features the beautiful home of fabric designer Bonnee Sharp.

Bonnee is the artist behind Studio Bon Textiles and her current collection is available through Schumacher.  These are my favorites – although it was very hard to narrow it down to these four because I could picture fun ways to use pretty much any of them!

I love the clean, graphic patterns and colors of her fabrics and want to find a way to use some in my home.  Have you come across any new design finds that you’d like in your home?

Big Fall Plans

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

UN_rs-1I have the nesting bug heading into fall this year and have more projects lined up than I’m sure I can accomplish.  I’m planning to finish off my living room, make some pillows and do another art project for the family room, spruce up the master bedroom, update the guest room, and last but not least transform my daughter’s bedroom – all before Christmas…  I might have bitten off a little too much, but I’m going to give it a try.  I’m starting with Violet’s room – here are my inspirations:

I want a sophisticated little girl’s room for my almost 4-year-old that will last for many years.  I’m planning to use a creamy, neutral palette for all of the major pieces and add splashes of coral and pink (Violet’s favorite color, of course).  Here is a sneak peek of the fabric I’ll be using:

Violet's fabric
I’ll be “breaking ground” in Violet’s room next week when our favorite contractor comes to help with some projects that are well beyond my skills, like remove the old radiator and repair the hardwood floors.  Stay tuned for more sneak peeks!
