Back in the Saddle

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

I’m back at the sewing machine these days – there are tons of stitches in my future. I’m still plugging away at my list, and after finishing the porch swing, I’m on to curtains for the dining room and curtains and pillows for the living room.

I love the fabric for the dining room curtains, but I’m particularly excited about my plans for the living room.  You may remember from last fall that I’m working on a blue scheme using our existing blue chairs as a starting point.  Now that we have a fabulous painting, new couch and a little extra floor space, it’s time to start to add the finishing touches.  Here’s my updated plan:

I just love the fabric scheme:

Hopefully in a few weeks we’ll have curtains, pillows and a reupholstered ottoman…  The lighting will have to wait until our wallet has recovered.

Montauk Nest Chair by West Elm

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

I love the Montauk Nest Chair* by West Elm. I have two in mind for our new living room, though my co-designer/husband says, “No way!” I think he’s hung up on the fact that they are outdoor chairs; I might agree after seeing them in person. But until he, or they, prove me wrong I say, “What’s wrong with bringing an outdoor chair indoors?” If the shoe fits…

West Elm "Montauk Nest" Chair

What do you think? Have you seen these up close? Am I crazy? I really like the washed grey color and I would put more of an “indoor” upholstered cushion on the seats. They look so lounge-y without being heavy or stuffy.

I’m not giving up…

*it appears the chair isn’t available on the website; I originally saw it in the catalog

A Room for Relaxing

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

It’s time for a change!  The family room that we spend most of our time in has really turned into the kids’ space.  Andy and I spend a lot of time stashing toys away when we want to relax at the end of the day or when we have visitors.  So, we’ve decided that we need a grown-up space specifically designed for lounging after the little guys are asleep or when we have company.  The plan is to update our living room from a sitting room to a place where we can actually do a little more living.  Here is what our living room looks like today:

It’s not bad, but there are a few issues that have prevented us from really using the space.  For starters, it’s not all that cozy or comfortable.  The couch is small and a little hard and the empty bookshelves have always bothered me.  The previous owner of our house was an English professor, and we have more built-in bookcases in our house than we need.  So, the plan for this room is to remove the bookcases and use the wall space for some curtains to soften things up.  The bummer is that the hardwood floors don’t go under the bookcases and the walls behind the shelves are covered with wallpaper that has been painted several times.  This means repairs to the floors and the walls, so we’ll need to empty the room and repaint the walls.  We’re going to take it as an opportunity to start from scratch.  I’m planning to keep some blue, but not quite as much.  I’m thinking white walls, neutral furniture and pops of bright blue.  Here are some images I’ve been using as inspiration:

Here’s my current design board:

We’ll be keeping the sideboard (and blue chairs, for now), but the rest of the pieces will be new additions.  I’m so excited about the artwork by Amanda Talley.  It’s our first piece of original art, and we actually commissioned it especially for the space – I’ll share more about that process some other time.  The couch will be much bigger, and more comfortable, than our current couch and will have large table lamps on either side.  We bought both the couch and lamps on sale this weekend at Ruth & Ollie, one of my favorite Richmond stores.  I’m planning to make throw pillows for the couch out of this fun fabric by Quadrille.  We’re considering a gilt cocktail table to replace the ottoman that our cats have shredded, but that won’t happen for a little while.  The final touches will be white linen curtains and some white flowers.

We won’t be tackling the floors and walls until after the holidays, but some of the furnishings will be in place before then.  I can’t wait until we’re relaxing in our new living room.  I’ll keep you posted as it comes together!

Short and Sweet

Friday, May 14th, 2010

I have 2 sick kiddies at home today, and I’m running on fumes after getting up with both of them several times last night.  Needless to say, I’m low on inspiration and time, so I’ll keep it short and sweet today.  I have this room in my inspiration folder (I cannot remember where I found it – does anyone recognize it?).

I love the soothing color scheme, the painting, the white chairs, the light-as-air table, the pillows (did I miss anything).  I’m going to close my eyes for just a minute and imagine that I’m sipping a latte while lounging in this room!

One last reminder:  today is the last day to enter to win my extra set of fabric bookends.  We will announce the winner on Monday.  Have a great weekend!

Sleeping on the Couch

un_jbI scored a terrific bargain last weekend at Anthropologie that I’m excited to share with you. These Kapali Euro Shams that I have always loved were on clearance for $7.95 each — down from $48.00!

For as long as long as I’ve been admiring this collection at Anthropologie, I’ve never considered actually buying any piece of it because it’s not the right fit for either of our bedrooms and they were pretty pricey. But there’s something about a bargain that gets the creative juices flowing for me and it didn’t take long to envision them in our living room!

Why not, right?

The colors are perfect as I continue to layer in shades of orangey-red. The oversized graphic detail balances the scale of some of my smaller throw pillows with the large patterned rug and newly painted foyer wall. Come to think of it, that striped bolster is stuffed with standard bed pillows, too. I promise no one in our home is sleeping on the couch, unless you count the dog.

Best of all, I can throw these shams in the wash, which means I don’t have to debate with my husband about why I’d prefer him to not rest his head on that pillow, or that one, or that one…

Living Room – Feeling Blue?

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

UN_rs-1I am still dreaming of a completed living room with all of the finishing details in place.  I’m missing curtains, pillows, and definitely some accessories for the bookshelves.  The previous owner of our house was an English professor, and we have more built in bookshelves than any house I’ve ever seen!  Here’s a reminder of what our living room looks like today.

A couple of weeks ago I shared a navy and coral scheme that I’m toying around with.  I’m also considering keeping everything clean with an all blue scheme with a few crisp white accents.  Maybe it’s because I just got back from the beach, but there is something about this fresh scheme that really appeals to me.  I’m thinking books wrapped in white parchment on the shelves and a few shells.  Here are a few other things I’d use:

  1. Crisp, white linen curtains like these from West Elm,
  2. I still love this Celerie Kemble fabric from Schumacher for some pillows,
  3. More pillows out of this Schumacher fabric,
  4. Fresh porcelain accents, like this vintage piece from Coucoumadame,
  5. I’d still like to work in this vase from Global Table and
  6. These letterpress cards from Horne framed in white on the bookshelves

So, what’s your vote?  Add a punch of color with some coral accents or keep it fresh and breezy with blue?

Living Room – Could it be Coral?

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Do you have a room in your house that’s almost complete but just needs those few finishing details to tie it all together?  For me, it’s our living room. We’ve made some good progress since we moved in almost 3 years ago, but it’s time to make the final push. Here’s what our living room looked like when we first looked at the house.

Once we moved in, we had no furniture in this room for the first 6 months that we were here.  It was like one giant empty entryway (the front door opens in to this room). We were always explaining to neighbors who stopped by that we really had moved in – we just didn’t have furniture yet.  At first it really bothered me that it wasn’t in our budget to finish the room in one fell swoop as soon as we moved in, but now I know it was for the best. Here’s what our living room looks like today.

We’ve chosen the pieces in the room slowly over the last 3 years. Now all we need are some finishing details – pillows, curtains, and some accessories for the book shelves. I’d like to add a pop of color to the navy, blue-grey, and brown palette. Coral is one possibility. I’ve found inspiration from one of my favorite catalogues, JCrew:

And just the other day, I saw this room by Amanda Nisbet on Coco + Kelley

{images from Amanda Nisbet via Coco + Kelley}

Here’s what I’m considering:

  1. Pillows on the couch out of this Celerie Kemble fabric from Schumacher,
  2. A linen accent fabric from Gray Line Linen for some other throw pillows,
  3. Framed letterpress cards from Horne on the bookshelves,
  4. Books on the shelves covered in this paper from Paper Source,
  5. Another linen from Gray Line Linen to trim the window treatments and
  6. This barnacle vase from Global Table

So, what do you think, could coral be just a passing fancy?  Stayed tuned for some other options I’m considering.
